If a small business owner opens a new restaurant, but tells no one it is there, how will he get customers? Hope they walk by? He will surely go out of business quickly. Likewise, if you save your company money, how will your boss know unless you tell him? He won't. Communicating your value to your company is key, and HOW you communicate your value is key. In this blog post, I will share the top 3 elements on how to communicate your value. You want your communication to be a bullseye, not five different darts all over the board shot haphazardly and confusingly.

Here are the three elements I see as important to getting a bullseye on your value communication:
1. Ties back to the business bottom line
If you aren't impacting the business positively, then why are you there?
2. Ties back to your bosses yearly goals
Helping your boss fulfill his or her yearly goals will do wonders for you. If you don't know his or her goals, ask.
3. Clearly and concisely states actions and impacts in time, money, or other quantifying terms.
If your communication is unclear, confusing, or convoluted, you'll do more harm than good. Keep it simple and to-the-point, with dollar signs and numbers wherever possible. Tables and graphs can also help.
Use these elements in your value communication upwards at least annually, although I recommend short updates to your boss quarterly. Make sure your hard work is seen and noticed!
